In my teenage years, a memory that stands out vividly is my best friend kissing Steve, my boyfriend on Valentine’s Day.
I remember it vividly. We were at a Valentine’s Day party, I went inside and there they were my boyfriend and best friend kissing!
I was absolutely devastated, and feeling I was not good enough. While in reality, I was always good enough! I just had the wrong choice of friends.
During my early twenties, I was not a great fan of Valentine’s day. I found it depressing if I had no boyfriend to celebrate with.
Fast forward to me at twenty-seven, working on cruise ships and still hating valentine’s day. All the guys who had broken my heart and gave me the classic “it is not you, it is me” line or “I don’t want to hurt you”….. whatever.
I decided to head down to the officer’s bar for a few wines. It was there where I met Erik, the Chief Electrical Engineer and the rest is, as they say, history. We have been happily married for fourteen years and have a beautiful nine-year-old daughter Chloe.
I remember my mum always saying to me “When the time is right you will meet him” and so it did on the 14th of February 2006!
However you feel about Valentine’s day, never give up on the magic that could happen…….
